The IREM® Foundation awards grants to support research, sustainability, education, and workforce development initiatives in the real estate management profession. Grants are reviewed and funded quarterly, or until the annual budget is exhausted.

General fund grants

The IREM Foundation dedicates 5% of assets to a general grant fund that supports our desire to advance DEI, sustainability, research, and education in the profession through IREM, and other external partners.

In the past two years, Elaina’s Sustainability Grants have funded 10 sustainability projects that inspire innovation, adoption, and research of sustainability practices in the built environment.

Research grants

Up to two, $10,000 research grants are available each year to researchers with proposals that provide real estate managers with knowledge that helps them manage properties to help communities thrive.

Considering applying for a grant? Here’s what you need to know.

Application window

  • Applications received before January 1st are reviewed and, if awarded, funded by April 1st.
  • Applications received before April 1st are reviewed and, if awarded, funded by July 1st.
  • Applications received before July 1st are reviewed and, if awarded, funded by October 1st.
  • Applications received before October 1st are reviewed and, if awarded, funded by January 1st.

Reporting requirements

  • Recipients are required to provide program updates and an annual report outlining the use of funds and program impact. Failure to report may impact future funding.
  • 501(c)(6) organizations that receive grant funds must keep records demonstrating that grant funds were utilized for the purpose granted and not used for general operations or professional promotion of the 501©(6) organization and shall be provided to the Foundation upon request.

    Eligibility

    Grants may be awarded to IREM, IREM chapters, 501(c)(3) organizations, 501(c)(6) organizations, academic institutions, companies, or individuals.

    Funding

    The IREM Foundation allocate 5% of the organization’s total assets each year to support programs that align with the mission.

    Criteria

    Applications are evaluated on the following criteria:

    • Anticipated likelihood of success.
    • Alignment with IREM Foundation strategic priorities.
    • Demonstrates a charitable nature as defined by the IRS.
    • Demonstrates forward thinking and “curious” approaches to existing challenges.
    • Clearly illustrates data points and metrics to track successful outcomes.
    • Illustrates ways in which the program/initiative will foster engagement.
    • Offers visibility for the Foundation.
  • Elaina’s sustainability grants

    Eligibility

    Grants from Elaina’s Sustainability Fund are open to anyone in the world who is ready to take steps to improve the environmental footprint of commercial real estate. This includes, but is not limited to IREM members, real estate managers, building owners, tenants, residents, students, and faculty of academic institutions.

    Preference will be given to programs that demonstrate creativity and innovation, as well as individuals or companies that may otherwise lack the funds to implement the program.

    Funding

    The IREM Foundation will consider grant requests ranging from $500 - $5000. Up to four $5,000 grants will be awarded.

    Criteria
    Applications will be evaluated on the criteria below:

    • Anticipated impact/reduction in consumption of energy and natural resources
    • The likelihood of success
    • Creativity/innovation
    • Ability to measure results
    • Demonstrated need for resources
    • Grant’s ability to have significant impact on a project
    • Number of people impacted, i.e., residents, tenants
    • Length of time for project to be deemed a success and the ability to maintain funding in subsequent years as may be needed

    Special consideration will be given to proposals that embody initiatives that increase diversity, the engagement of young professionals, and expansion of industry knowledge as these are at the core of the IREM Foundation values and purpose.

  • Research grants

    Eligibility

    Aveni center research grants will be open to: IREM® members, non-members, researchers, academic institutions, associations, workforce development partners, corporate partners, or other individuals or organizations that have the means and ability to provide valuable research in the real estate management field.

    Funding

    Up to two $10,000 awards per year

    More than two awards per year may be made so long as the total does not exceed $20,000

    Criteria
    Research proposals will be evaluated on the criteria below:

    • Alignment with IREM Foundation strategic priorities
    • Likelihood of success
    • Number of people impacted, i.e., real estate managers, residents, tenants
    • Demonstrates forward thinking and “curious” approaches to existing challenges.
    • Clearly illustrates data points and metrics to track successful outcomes.
    • Illustrates ways in which the program/initiative will foster engagement.
    • Offers visibility for the Foundation.

    Other

    • Copyright is retained by the researcher.
    • The IREM Foundation will have the first chance to publish before other academic institutions or journals.
    • The IREM Foundation has the right to request a presentation to the Board, Foundation supporters, or IREM members.
    • Access to the final product or potential sales of the product/resulting products will be determined on a case-by-case basis.
